Teaching Guide Now Available

A new teaching guide is available for educators who seek to add Ed Fuller's well told story of his leadership experiences with Marriott Lodging International to their management courses.  Here is a brief overview:

YOU CAN’T TEACH WITH YOUR FEET ON THE DESK

A teaching guide for You Can’t Lead with your Feet on the Desk prepared by:

Dr. Michael Oshins
Associate Professor of the Practice
Boston University School of Hospitality

For over two decades, Ed Fuller was responsible for establishing and directing the international operations of the Marriott hotel chain – a period of growth from 16 hotels in six countries grossing $325 million to 400 properties across 70 countries with revenues of nearly $7 billion. Mr. Fuller’s international experience, combined with his strong operational experience in the US, including his role as the opening General Manager of the 1000+ room Copley Marriott hotel in Boston, provides the background for him to offer life lessons to future global leaders. Told through personal stories of his successes and failures, his memoir provides rich examples to reflect upon and use as touch points for students as they embark on their own careers in the hospitality industry or in any career in which customer service is key to success.

For Whom This Guide is Designed
This teaching guide (a.k.a. Teach) is intended as a supporting reference for faculty of hospitality programs or for business schools who emphasize international service industries who wish to incorporate You Can’t Lead with Your Feet on the Desk (a.k.a. Lead) for an undergraduate senior or graduate level leadership course. It is particularly effective for courses that take a global, international view of industry.

How to Use “Lead”
Lead is not a text book – it is a collection of practical life lessons based on the decades-long experience of Marriott International Lodging president Ed Fuller. Lead can be used as a stand-alone book, relying on the bring it home advice at the end of each chapter as the basis for class discussion. Within an academic setting, however, the lessons of Lead are best leveraged in combination with models or theories that provide a frame work for understanding Mr. Fuller’s experiences at a deeper level. Lead also provides a hospitality context for great business authors such as Kotter, Goleman and Collins – taking their ideas and applying them specifically to “real world” international hotel situations.

One key strength of Lead is its FLEXIBILITY.

In writing his book, Ed Fuller was eager for his experiences and insights to be shared with educators and their students.  Thanks to Dr. Oshins's new teaching guide business schools and hospitality management programs can take full advantage of Fuller's wisdom and savvy which was forged by his own education and 40 years of global experience in the lodging industry.
